Dangers of a small kitchen fire!!

Earlier today a colleague at work passed a link to a video that reminded me of the risks of a small kitchen fire caused by a pot of burning oil. Please take note of the 4 steps to control and then extinguish the fire and remember don't try and move the pot or throw water on the fire!

Maintenance of Emergency & Exit Lights

Emergency & Exit lighting systems are an Essential Safety Measure and must be maintained in a operational condition to which they were intended. To verify the performance of each fitting or system lights are required to inspected and tested periodically (6-monthly) by carrying out a specific maintenance and test regime.

The following Codes and Australian Standards apply to the installation and maintenance of emergency and exit lighting systems:

AS2293.1-1995 Emergency evacuation and lighting in buildings. System design, installation and operation.

Aspirating Smoke Detection

An aspirating smoke detector is a type of smoke detector, based on a [[wp:nephelometer]] that is capable of detecting the presence of microscopic particles of combustion also known as (smoke) suspended in air by detecting the light scattered from the smoke particles in a sampling chamber.

In the context of [[wp:smoke detection]], the word aspirate means to draw in, which illustrates the basis for how these smoke detectors operate. In most cases aspirating smoke detectors require a fan unit to draw in a representative sample of air from the protected area.
