I received the following email as an update on the regulatory changes in Queensland from the Queensland Fire & rescue Service (QFRS). It outlines the analysis of the submissions received from stakeholders and the community regarding the review of Queensland Building Fire Safety Regulation 1991 by Department of Emergency Services (DES).

The Fire Protection Association of Australia has produced a new Technical Bulletin TB-011: Update for AS1851-2005 Maintenance of fire protection systems and equipment.

The bulletin provides discussion directed to FPA members, building owners, managers, tenants, maintenance companies, fire services, insurers and consultants and was designed to identify the ''key benefits'' of AS1851-2005 and highlight future refinements to the standard.

China Fire 2006 Expo & Conference wrap-up

The China Fire Protection Association (CFPA) recently held their annual conference and exposition in Beijing. The conference was held between October 26-29 at the National Agricultural Exhibition Hall.

The Fire Protection Association of Australia (FPA) was represented by a group of 15 people representing various Australian industry bodies, associations and companies.

A terrible tragedy occurred early this morning here in Melbourne, when a man died in a home fire that the fire brigade believe was caused by a discarded cigarette.

Cigarette likely cause of fatal house fire

Fire investigators believe a fatal house fire at Heidelberg Heights, in Melbourne's east, was caused by a discarded cigarette.

A 56-year-old man died in the front room of the Wordsworth Avenue home about 2:00am.

Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services Board spokesman Bob Undy says smoke alarms in the house were working when the fire started.

"The smoke alarms had melted off the roof but being the early hours of the morning, it was unfortunate no-one else heard the alarm," he said.

Fire Australia 2006 - Melbourne

November 1-3 2006 - Fire Australia 2006 will be held in Melbourne during the Spring Racing Carnival. The theme for the conference will be Sporting, Entertainment and Leisure Facilities â€“ How do we make them fire safe?

The focus of this conference is particularly relevant as it is held the week before the famous Melbourne Cup racing carnival and it is the year Melbourne plays host to the Commonwealth Games.

This major fire event is expected to attract delegates and visitors from all states of Australia, the Asia Pacific, New Zealand, United States of America, United Kingdom and Europe.
