Get involved because safety is everybody’s business

Safe Work Australia Week is a national week developed to focus attention on workplace safety issues around Australia. It aims to encourage all working Australians particularly employers to get involved and concentrate on safety in their workplace to reduce death, injury and disease.

The Auslan Fire Alarm Subsidy Initiative

The Auslan Fire Alarm Subsidy was launched by the Victorian Government. It is a special program to give deaf people flashing light fire alarms at a cheap price. The aim of the program is to give 600 fire alarms to profoundly deaf Auslan (Australian sign language) users. This will happen between 2006 – 2008.

Vicdeaf is the administrator for the program. Partners in the program are the Victorian Government, Victorian Council of Deaf People (VCOD), the Deaf Blind Association (DBA) and both the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) and Country Fire Authority (CFA).

Victoria - Current Fire Incidents

The Department of Sustainability and Environment manages fire on public land, including reducing the risk of fire, containing outbreaks of fire.

Australia: Simplex recall smoke detectors

According to the Product Safety Section of the ACCC, Simplex Fire Products, a division of Tyco International have recalled photoelectric smoke detectors and sensors effective 04/09/2006.

Details of the product recall are listed, and the product recall is specific to photoelectric smoke detectors and sensors manufactured from July 2004 to December 2005.

Victoria Building Regulations 2006

On June 6, 2006, the Minister for Planning, the Hon Rob Hulls published the Victoria Building Regulations 2006, statutory rule No. 68/2006.

The publication of these regulations has been shrouded in some media attention and has lead to the following;

I, Rob Hulls, Minister for Planning and Minister responsible for administering the Building Act 1993, give notice under section 12 of the Subordinate Legislation Act 1994 as follows:

Australia: Notifier recall fire panels

According to the Product Safety Section of the ACCC, Notifier Inertia a division of Honeywell Limited have issued a product recall for IFS-2600, IFS-2400 and IFS-008 Fire Indicator Panels.

The recall affects panels supplied between September 2003 and February 2005.

Australia: Ziton recall fire equipment

According to the Product Safety Section of the ACCC, Ziton fire products, a division of GE Interlogix have recalled a range of fire detectors, fire panels & evacuation systems that may result in a failure to detect all fire hazards in limited circumstances.
