Maintenance of Emergency & Exit Lights

Emergency & Exit lighting systems are an Essential Safety Measure and must be maintained in a operational condition to which they were intended. To verify the performance of each fitting or system lights are required to inspected and tested periodically (6-monthly) by carrying out a specific maintenance and test regime.

The following Codes and Australian Standards apply to the installation and maintenance of emergency and exit lighting systems:

  • AS2293.1-1995 Emergency evacuation and lighting in buildings. System design, installation and operation.
  • AS2293.2, 1995 Emergency evacuation and lighting in buildings. Inspection and maintenance.
  • AS2293.3, 1995 Emergency evacuation and lighting in buildings. Emergency luminaries and exit signs.
  • Building Code of Australia, (as amended to date). Class 2 to Class 9 Buildings, Section E.

Maintenance Obligations - What must be done and when?

The maintenance details which follow provide an indication of the scope of works which should be carried out to ensure that the system will operate correctly when required to do so.

  • Maintenance to the system should be carried out every six months by persons having appropriate qualifications and experience applicable to this type of work.
  • The maintenance and testing of exit lighting systems is the same as that carried out for emergency lighting systems. It is therefore usual to carry out these procedures concurrently.
  • At the completion of any inspection, any deficiencies in the system must be rectified as soon as practical.
