Earlier today, my 11 year old daughter sent me an email with an attached photograph.
The photograph was of a smoke detector she observed in a private medical clinic that she described as "Yucky!"

Smoke Detector vs Smoke Alarm
Google Trends is a service provided by Google to where you can compare the world's interest in your favorite topics. Google Trends also shows how frequently your topics have appeared in Google News stories, and in which geographic regions people have searched for them most.
Google Trends works by analysing a portion of Google web searches to compute how many searches have been done for the terms you enter, relative to the total number of searches done on Google over time. Then Google displays the search results as a graph plotted on a linear scale.
So your intrepid blogger decided to see what was more popular a Smoke Detector or a Smoke Alarm....
Aspirating Smoke Detection
An aspirating smoke detector is a type of smoke detector, based on a [[wp:nephelometer]] that is capable of detecting the presence of microscopic particles of combustion also known as (smoke) suspended in air by detecting the light scattered from the smoke particles in a sampling chamber.
In the context of [[wp:smoke detection]], the word aspirate means to draw in, which illustrates the basis for how these smoke detectors operate. In most cases aspirating smoke detectors require a fan unit to draw in a representative sample of air from the protected area.

Do Ionisation Smoke Detectors pose radiation danger?
Smoke detectors or Smoke alarms are important safety devices, because of their obvious potential to save lives and property. There are two types of smoke detector commonly available in many countries.
One type uses the radiation from a small amount of radioactive material to assist in the detection or presence of smoke particles. These "ion chamber smoke detectors" are popular, because they are low power, inexpensive and are sensitive to a wide range of fire conditions.
