AS1851 Maintenance of fire protection systems and equipment
The Australian Standard AS1851-2005 contains requirements as a means of satisfying various state regulations including Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) regulations and the relevant building control and/or fire service provisions for maintenance of fire safety measures.
The standard may also form the basis for performance-based solutions for the standard of performance of fire safety measures. The combination of inspection, test, preventive maintenance and survey may form part of the design requirements for an alternative solution that complies with the performance requirements of the Building Code of Australia.

FP-001-02 Smoke Detector Sensitivity Verification
From the Australian Standards (AS1851) FP-001-02 sub-committee room, smoke detector sensitivity verification is proposed to be the replacement for the current 'go/no-go' test of smoke detectors. These changes are proposed to replace the current requirement in AS1851:2005 in table 6.4.2 Item 2.31.
The proposed changes consider the requirements of various detector types including; collective, collective auto-recalibrating with CIE indication, collective auto-recalibrating without CIE indication and analogue addressable.
Wire-free fire detection systems a reality?
Standards Australia has just published the second edition to Australian Standard, AS4428.9-2006
Fire detection, warning, control and intercom systems - Control and indicating equipment - Requirements for wire-free alarm zone circuits.
This document provides a path for manufacturers to develop or deploy a new range of products not generally available in Australia.
While wire-free alarms are available, they are generally based on overseas technologies or come as an import from the security industry.
